The Road Not Taken

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

There is nothing worse to me than to be lost. I hate traveling to other places and get lost, especially if it is in high traffic locations such as the interstate where it's hard to change lanes and make an exit. To help me with that, my wonderful wife gave me one of those high tech, sophisticated GPS systems for Christmas. I was so excited at the thought of never messing with mapquest again, never stopping at the convenient store again, and never dealing with the frustration of being lost ever again.

I pulled the GPS system out of the box, turned it on, walked out side, and within a matter of minutes the screen was telling me exactly where I was. This little gadget was beaming information from a satellite in outer space. Information like where the closest gas stations, restaurants, stores, entertainment, and just about anything else I wanted to know was at. Being a gadget lover, I was instantly impressed.

One of my first experiences on the road was typical to what the book said. It said that it's route may differ a little from my normal route, but generally works best in areas that I wasn't used to. So the first real time I had to use it was traveling to a friends house for dinner one night. These friends of ours live about thirty minutes away. I know exactly how to get to their house, but I decided to just see which way the GPS would take me. From the beginning the GPS decided to take a different route than I would have, but I knew the route it was taking so I followed. Eventually the GPS directed me to take what seemed to be that road you see in every horror movie where the people break down and are murdered. I thought well, maybe it's a short cut. About five miles down this eerie road, it tells me to take a left. At it's instruction I look to my left at what appears to be an overgrown pond/swamp/field. It was sort of a combination of those three things, but clearly not a road. Let's just say that we were two hours late for dinner going somewhere that I knew how to get to, but was lost because of my new electronic guide.

So what does this have to do with the portion of the poem above? Well on that particular night I chose the road less traveled and you know what? I was late! However there is one instance that I know that the road less traveled really has made all the difference. Matthew 7:13-14 says 13Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. 14Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.

In the world there are an abundance of roads that can be taken that will destroy your life on earth, as well as your eternity. Notice that the scripture tells us that many find that road. But the road that leads to life is narrow. Notice that the scripture tells us that there are few who find it. The problem is that so many have their life's GPS system on navigate thinking that it's taking them in the right direction, only to be sadly mistaken in the end. I want to encourage you today to stop and look around and see where you are heading. If the journey ended today would you arrive at the right destination?

If you feel as though you wouldn't be in the right place, please allow me to point you in the right direction. John 14:6 Jesus said to him (Thomas), "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." Jesus is the way to get where you are going. If you haven't been following him I would encourage you to start today. It's simply asking Christ to forgive you for not living your life for Him, and acknowledging the fact that you would like to begin today.

If you would like me to talk, and/or pray with you, please let me know by contacting me at info@BrandonMatthews.com I would love to hear from you.

I took the road less traveled, and that has made all the difference!
